Circular No 221

Newsletter for Alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,
As I have told everyone, I need to know who would like attachments, (photos) included in their mail???
There is a problem of returned mail because of “Over the Quota” in hotmail, tstt.net.tt, carib-link.com and such servers, because of small storage space.
I would like to suggest to those that suffer for extra space to open a new free email server for the Circular, such as yahoo.com, netscape.net, gmail.com and others that let you receive large volumes of email, but maybe you would like to set it aside for the “CIRCULAR”?
I am trying to keep the Circular’s size down to 500kb, although most are going to be in the 350kb range.
For those that have asked to eliminate the attachments, the size would be about 50kb to 70kb.
Please write your preference, I do not want to incommodate you!

What a fabulous update and thanks a million for keeping in touch.
I check in tomorrow for the Prelims, and on Wednesday I go through all the tests, so should know better where I stand (from where I sit) and will pass the news on.
Always a pleasure hearing from you, and all the very best to you both and your Clan. With love,

Dear Arthur and Val,
Time really flies.
Thanks very much for the up date.
Congrats to you and your family you have aimed for and achieved excellence.
I am always rather reluctant to talk about myself.
Sometimes I simply say click on www.itlos.org and on judges then scroll down to Anthony Amos Lucky.
It is all there.
I assure you that I do this in all humility.
Cintra and I have four daughters, two are married.
Cindy-Ann is a medical doctor and is attached to St.Pauls hospital Vancouver.
She is currently Associate Professor Clinical Medicine UBC.
Her husband is a psychiatrist at UBC.
They have a three year old daughter, Isabel.
Gillian is a lawyer, practices here and is the MP for Pointe a Pierre.
When her party was in Government she was the Minister of Legal Affairs and acted as Attorney General in the absence of the A.G.Elizabeth lives in Ancaster, her degree is in Industrial Management and accountancy.
She is married and they have a son, Matthew, now three and a half years old.
Antonia, the youngest, lives here she has a masters in Environmental Management and is employed with the National Gas Company as the Environmental and Safety Coordinator.
Cintra retired as a graduate teacher and ended her career as Vice Principal of Presentation College San Fernando.
She was a teacher at St.Josephs' Convent for 25 years before moving to Pres.
She is currently the Chairperson of the Tableland High School.
The Headquarters of International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, ITLOS, is in Hamburg.
The Court sits there.
Since my election at the UN in September 2003 we have had to be in Hamburg on six occasions for Sessions and cases.
Cintra accompanied me on four of them.
On the last visit, two weeks ago she visited the Baltic, Lubec and on German unification day a holiday there I was able to accompany her on a brief two day visit to Berlin, leaving on Sunday and returning on Monday.
Cintra used to teach Geography and loves the subject, memories of Fr.Ildefons.
God has been and is being good to us.
With kind regards,
Anthony
(Is there any way to get these memories on a paper? No one has the necessary prose to write on Fr. Ildefonse? Ed.)

Subject : Life today

Dearest Cintra & Anthony,
How is life with you two?
Guess that you had a marvellous tour of Canada, and have settled back home.
Anthony, did you get to Europe for your Judicial Adventure?
Must have been a fabulous opportunity for you (just to be offered the challenge).
Val & I have completed our Year of travel, gallivanting about the (restricted) World, visiting family and friends and generally having a ball.
Started in Sept '04 at our Island Resort, finishing off our summer, and 'falling' into the colder month till mid Oct.
Our Eldest daughter and family (three) took over our house for the Year.
From mid Oct till mid Dec we drove through the U.S.A. from Maine, along the Eastern Coast to South Carolina; then cut across towards Louisiana, spending a few days at each stop (visiting & sight-seeing); then through the pan-handle to Florida (north); and swung back up the Eastern States once more before carousing back to jolly old Canada, in time to spend Christmas with the 4 siblings of ours here in Nova Scotia.
After that we shunted off to Tobago (as in Trinidad) for 3 months; where we were swarmed with relatives, and other wonderful people; settled daughter (F) Fleurette in Tobago; where Fr. Ildefons' teachings and scouting skills helped us (daughter & I) build a Tiki Hut of bamboo & coconut branches as their outdoor rec centre of entertainment.
In between, we took a trip to Barbados, where Cecil Ince hosted a Old Mount Re-Union of real oldies (the originals) including brother Jack & Scipio Soodeen (see Ladislao's latest Mount Bulletin) hope you are on the mailing list.
Then we returned through Toronto in April, visiting Val's Mum and seeing family there, and a few Old Mounties.
Back in time to get the boat in the water, and open up our Log Cabin,(where we were temporarily housed - on & off - very backwoods like - one solar light - 4hrs - 8.00 to 1200 p.m.; no running water, unless you count running up the hill to the Cabin with a bucket full; plus outhouse, on the edge of a cliff - with fabulous view - known as "Loo with a View", where one sits, contemplates, and witnesses the goings on the Lake).
In June we visited Spain to house & dog sit Val's brother's Hacienda, and our son (E) Edward, wife Michelle, and daughter Jesse visited us for 2 weeks.
We then went to Sheffield, England where he works as Project Director of Symmetry Medical, who manufactures titanium body joints, World Wide.
Back to Halifax to enjoy the balance of the summer, and to gradually re-inherit our house and turn it back into our home.
Busy bees.
I am experiencing a little "Ticker Flicker" at the present time, and the Doctors are wavering between Lungs & Heart; so going through a host of tests etc., which all takes so much time.
So let us have some of your news, and if you have any old boys of Mount e-mail addresses, please send them on to me (and Ladislao).
Happy Thanksgiving, we celebrate that up here,
As ever, with prayers and love,
Art & Val

We’re back in Trinidad, my wife having completed her studies last November.
We all came back in June and she returned for her last semester from September so I don't miss the warm climate; I miss taking a drive without reinventing the wheel every morning.

Dear Friends,

Another friend, found through Art, thank you.

The emailing is continuing as usual, those that have servers other than the 1000Mbyte free mail box at yahoo.com, are being shortcharged because in lots of addressees I get the mail returned as “Mail box over the quota” due to the limited mailbox storage space.

I suggest that you check for email that you are missing and ask Don Mitchell for the missing issues.

This is especially true for Trincoll and that must miss a lot of messages.

Art,
The report from Vity is correct.
I am now almost in transit to Australia for 4-5 months and leave Trinidad very soon.
My business here keeps me very busy with little time to respond to non-essential e-mails which may lead to more time on the computer which I can little afford.
Whilst in Australia, I will have lots of time and will be happy to respond to "The Abbey Old Boys" club.
This was not however, my last high school in Trinidad.
Pass this on.

Desmond,
How is life with you these days?
Mount Old Boys (Ladislao in Venezuela) are trying to locate you in Trinidad, and need an address (or phone #); and I got hold of Ken last night at a Halloween Disguise Party, and he suggested I e-mail you.
Has your office # as 652-6644!?! but was not sure where you were staying, or how to get hold of you.
I heard from Vitalis Gomes (another old boy) that last Fri there was an Earth Quake of 5.6 on the Ricta Scale; and that 5 weeks ago you had waves of 20 ft at Maracas Bay and in the Gulf of Paria at Mosquito Creek and Pointe-a-Pierre, is this all true?!?
Vity is in Regina, Sascatchewan, but is in the process of selling his Condo and moving to Ontario, probably nears Niagara.
I offered to give him some 'old mount' contacts there like, Trevor Evelyn, Mickey Chatterton, Trevor Soodeen (lost touch with him about 3 yrs ago), and David de Castro (who sings Calypso's, and composed one for Caribanza a couple of years ago.
Loads of Trinis in the big.
Keep in touch, and all the best,
Art

Querido amigo:
Claro que me acuerdo de ti.
Yo soy Julio César Arreaza , yo sólo cursé el segundo año.
Mi primo Rómulo Arreaza llegó el mismo año que yo y cursó el cuarto año.
A mi algunos me llamaban Pipa, especialmente Rómulo.
Saludos,
Julio César

Dearest Mike & Val,
Roses (Knaggs) Eckel and I have been exchanging adventures, and she mentioned crossing your paths recently, so I took the liberty of scrounging your e-mail address from her.
Time flies, and here we are in the Autumn of our youth still ploughing along on our fabulous journey of life, and really savouring (as best we can) every moment, and every step of the way.
Every day is not always good day, yet life's voyage is a blend of attitude, aptitude and balance, with a sprinkling of laughter and good humour, and saturated in love and caring (always with our eyes and hearts lifted up towards He who guides us).
As I reflect on those wonderous days at the Mount, I seem to remember a nick name like "Donkey mane" and guess it came from the length of your hair (and no other extremity.
Don't know if you are aware (all the way up in the frozen North Sea, Abberdeen) but the younger generation have taken over the Olympic Easter Candle of the Abbey School, and have continued the race of drawing together and binding the various Years of Scholastic Wisdom, by putting out a weekly Bulletin which covers the goings-on of all the past students they can wrangle together.
Ladislao Kertesz of Venezuela, heads the group of enthusiasts working on this project, and I have taken the liberty of passing on your name so that you can be involved as a recipient of the various individuals that shared the spirit and wonder of the Monestery and the lives of the fabulous Priests and Brothers who dedicated their time, talent and treasure in moulding us into what we have become today.
If you can spare a few moments to update us on a brief synopsis of your journey, it would be a fantastic contribution to all those exposed to it I am sure.
I was at Mount from 1944 to 1949, and am retired now for about 8 years, having moved to Canada in 1978.
We have 6 off-spring, in our alphabetical way, A, B and C are in our area of Nova Scotia; D is in New Brunswick; E is in Sheffield, England; and F is in Tobago (her Husband Iain Mac Kinnon is with High Ropes and works on the Offshore Rigs in the North Sea (or whereever else they send him).
We have 9 Grans and another on the way; and love the snow (especially when we leave it and venture down to the W.I.
So do drop us a line, and if there are any other Old Boys hovering around your area, please 'sook' me onto them so we can make contact.
Just got hold of Vitalis Gomes, Earl Kayne, and the younger Tyrone Soodeen, along with Trevor Evelyn (who is computer challenged - so no e-mail).
Love to Val, and look forward to hearing from you.
Love and fondest regards,
Art & Val

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Now a little resume from your editor, of last weeks visits:

I just returned from a short three day trip to the East of Venezuela.
On the first day I met Wbladimiro Diaz, (Class 1975) my dentist in Puerto La Cruz.
On the second day I contacted Elias Farcheg, (Class 1960) who lives in El Tigre, see you his photo.
I was to have met Eloy Moffie and Oscar Cantore but no luck as, although I had initial contact with them, their cellphone was unavailable for the actual rendezvous.
The same happened with Edgar Moffie on the third Day.
As it is said, there is a long way between wishing to meet and to meeting.
Maybe next time.
I try to include photos of all oldboys whom I meet, but there has to be a meeting, otherwise I can only include the photos that I get thru email which is scarce.
Most alumni do not have digital or scanned photos, even as there is a spacecraft going to Pluton, launched yeserday.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------.
An old letter from Clive Bettencourt dated, 20 April 1983.

Dear Arthur,

Lovely to hear from you and thanks for sending OASIS. How it brings back memories.
I was very happy at the Mount more so than at school in England.
Sorry to hear of the death of Fr. Anselm, Leo and Bede.
Fr. Leo I knew very well and he even came to marry Maurice Correia in Guyana.
Fr. Ildefons and Fr. Bernard I remember with fond memories and many of the “boys” you mention.
I left Costa Rica in October 1980 as I did not like what was happening in Central America.
We, Marcelle and I went to live there in 1971 and our three girls were born there.
We loved the country and the people and were very happy but left really for the children.
How “we” have spread out around this globe.
We were down in Guyana recently and had to overnight in Trinidad.
Guyana as you know has gone to hell and the little I saw of Trinidad I did not like.
Cecil Ince who you mention in the newsletter lives next to my sister in Barbados and Trevor Evelyn, my good friend; I am the God father of one of his daughters, Simone.
So my good friend Paul Slinger gave me you address.
We were very friendly in Guyana and Trinidad and had some great times together.
Arthur enclosed is a ten bucks note.
When I have a family photograph I’ll send you one.

Dear Ladislao,
A bit of a surprise to see pictures from my web page on Circular 190.
Anyway thanks for doing so.
There was a phone message from Salvador on my voice mail, but I did not get one digit of his number, so I am unable to call him back.
Kindly send me his telephone number so that I can return his call.
Sincere best wishes,
Peter Gittens.

Dear Salvador,
Sorry about the delay in responding.
It seems that we had similar experiences.
With loss of electricity, we lost all our refrigerated and frozen food, and had to replace the compressor on the AC due to a power surge.
Luckily my insurance paid for the food and the Air conditioning service.
My phone number is 504 362-1988, cell is 504 715-5114, Office at Our Lady of Holy Cross College is 504 398-2142.
Do give me a call if/when you are in my area.
A Blessed and Merry Christmas to you and family,
Sincerely,
Peter Gittens.

Dear Salvador,
I got a message from you several; months ago, but apparently, I accidentally deleted the message before replying.
I e-mail Ladislao to get your e-mail address, but he did not reply.
Luckily I saw it today on the latest Mount Bulletin.
I have been living in Harvey LA from August 2001.
Before that I lived in Ontario Canada for about 30 years.
Hurricane Katrina did a bit of damage in my neighbourhood, but I was lucky to have no water damage or any flooding; only some wind damage.
I lost some roof shingles, but I will be getting a new roof this week.
Were you in any way affected by Katrina or Rita?
Any, sincere best wishes to you and family for a blessed and Merry Christmas.
Peter Gittens.

Dear Friends,

For some time that I get some of your emails returned either with the note that your address is non existent or that the message is SPAM.
If you really would like to be eliminated from the list, please say so, this would make my work load easier.
And for those that have paid their dues, remember that the photos are considered SPAM by lots of filters, in this case if you check your mail, make sure that you have all the issues.
If not then ask for the missing ones, I can send you the last few without a problem.
If the problem persists, I recommend that you open a Yahoo account and use it exclusively for the Circulars and your MSB correspondence, this way you need to open it only once a week and you would be in my message.
If you are missing the old ones, please write to my friend Don Mitchell for he has all of them from No.1 to the latest.
All this organization so that I may have time, to keep them coming to you every week, God willing.

Now back to business for two complete summaries of the old old gang.
(I would like that some of you would write this long, even if it is once a year. Ed.)

Great news and a real, pleasurable, condensed history of your life, bringing us up to date.
I retired about 8 years ago, having worked in sales of engineering equipment (mostly liquid handling equipment) like pumps, meters, valves, and all the accessory stuff, hose, nozzles for all types of industry.
We have 6 off-spring, in our alphabetical way, A, B and C are in our area of Nova Scotia; D is in New Brunswick; E is in Sheffield, England; and F is in Tobago (her Husband Iain Mac Kinnon is with High Ropes and works on the Offshore Rigs in the North Sea (or where ever else they send him).
We have 9 Grans and another on the way; and love the snow (especially when we leave it and venture down to the W.I.
On Sept 2004 we handed over our home to Anne-Marie, Martin & son, to look after while we did the "Nomad" (or quite mad) thing and drifted wherever the tide took us.
Started at our Island Resort (very primitive - Fr. Ildefons would have a ball there); and stayed there intermittently till mid Oct when we closed it down for the Winter.
Then we packed up our camping gear and headed South through the U.S.A. Eastern Seaboard, moseying along camping or hoteling till we reached Maryland where we stayed with a niece for a week.
We then continued visiting relatives and friends as we cruised down to Georgia and visited with cousin 'Bumpy' Llanos (Douglas' wife - he was at Barclays Bk), and gathered her up and set off for Louisiana to stay with her brother for a few days.
We then mosied along the panhandle, along the coast, through Mississippi camping again, cutting into Florida around Orlando, and gradually tracked slowly back up to Georgia, savouring the weather and friendships.
Stayed there a few days to complete some projects, then cruised back to Nova Scotia, at the end of November.
Visited with "Shaves" Stanley Ferguson for a while in where ever the heck he is in Florida, (need his email and telephone number, ed)A
Also saw all the O'Connor crowd as we passed through.
Bumpy's daughter Mary is married to Richard.
Spent Christmas with the family in N.S., and Ed & Michelle with their baby joined us from Sheffield for the festivities.
On 2nd Jan we headed to Tobago where we spent 3 months, frolicking between Trin & Tob, and even snuck in a trip to Barbados, where we met Cecil Ince & Scipio Soodeen.
Back to Toronto in April to stay with Val's Mum &amp; the Burke/Bell Clan there;
Back to N.S. to open up our Cabin for the Spring, and then left for Spain in June for 3 weeks (Ed & Michelle met us there);
next, over to Sheffield for a couple weeks, then down to enjoy more family in the London/Kent area till it was time to drag our smiling faces, and enlarged hearts back in Aug to N.S.
Again a summer stint at our Island Retreat, as we gradually started to settle back into our "Home Sweet Home".
All else goes well, and here we are gearing up for the White Stuff.
Holy Macaroni Man what an adventure.
So we were here in Sept when you came through, but had disconnected our phone for the Year.
Our new # is 902-404-5845, but same address, and as you see we have a new e-mail add as well.
Thanks ever so much for Ian's e-mail, as we stayed with Ian & Brenda in June 04 when we were out in Victoria for a month, when Ed & Michelle had their first baby, Jesse ( now they are expecting another in the new year).
So that's us in a nutshell.
I have recently had a little challenge with a "Ticker Flicker" that had me on a Medical Roller Coaster ride for 6 weeks, but am now on some new medication that has me feeling my old, 'young' self once more.
Still trying to stabilize my condition, so 'Don't worry, be happy'.
Fondest regards to you and your Clan,
As always, with love,
Art & Val

Hello Art & Val,
Thanks for the e-mail with all your news.
What with to-day being Halloween you'll probably think this must be a note from the grave.
Not so, Elaine and I are keeping well and even warm, as Calgary continues to enjoy a fabulous Indian summer (well deserved as winter seemed to stretch into September this year).
Also glad to have got your e-mail as I now have your correct address.
You had written in December telling of your planned junket and I had e-mailed back hoping to get to you before you took off, to make sure you looked us up if out this way.
When we passed through Halifax in Sept., on the way to Badeck, we were hoping to call you from the hotel but could not find your name in the phone book which included Halifax, Dartmouth and many smaller communities.
So figured you had moved to areas unknown.
A great pity we couldn't get together, as don't know when we will be back that way.
Also e-mailed you when we got back, but not sure if you got any of the e-mails as they were sent to a 'sympatico' address I had on file.
So much water under the bridge since we last communicated (when was it?), not sure where to start.
The long and short is 5 kids (3boys, 2 girls), all married except our free spirit (youngest boy) who works in the oilpatch in Saudi Arabia and plays wherever the surf's up (including near Halifax recently).
The eldest couple live in Toronto, whilst another is in Calgary and the other two in Sherwood Park (suburb of Edmonton).
We have 3 grands (2 boys, 4&2yrs; 1 girl 6yrs.).
I retired four years ago from the heavy equipment company (Wajax Industries) I joined when I came to Canada and spent 29 years with in their parts operation.
It was a great experience, as we moved about, spending 21/2 yrs. in Vancouver, 21/2 in Calgary, 14 in Edmonton and back to Calgary for the last 10.
Thoroughly enjoying retirement, although because of lousy knees have had to curtail my hobbies (tennis, squash, racquetball).
Still, don't miss the 60 hr. weeks; besides Elaine, while not admitting it, is probably thrilled to have me home 24/7!
She also retired about 14 yrs ago, after 10 yrs as a secretary with the school board in Sherwood park, where we lived when working in Edmonton.
That pretty well outlines the Kayne saga to date; so where and what have you folks been up to all these years?
Drop a line some time giving us the details, or better yet, come visit us.
Being so called 'empty nesters' we have lots of room!
Keep well and keep in touch!
Elaine joins in love,
Earle

P.S. Re. Wittet's e-mail, try bwittet@vtechworld.com
Seems they seldom use it, but Elaine speaks to Brenda regularly and we'll let you know if it's changed.

To compensate your lecture, I shall include additional photos to bring back the memories of the then years.

Also from this issue on, I am starting to catalogue all the photos that are going to be sent, by description, primary by person.
In description there is going to be the author and year taken.
Maybe Fr. Christopher could indicate if I am on the right track.
Of course you are going to get photos that you have seen but this time with catalogue number.
In the photos that have names missing, please help me.
