Notes for "Mount Boys" visiting this Blog

1. Total Circulars: There were 54 Circulars issued by Ladislao in the year 2006. The first was No 218, and the last was No 269.

2. Viewing Circulars: Only the last four are visible on the home page. Click on on the arrow next to the month in Archives in the column on the right to see the ones for that month. You can read each of the earlier ones, together with any comments posted by readers, by clicking on its headline in Archives. You are, of course, free to download the Circulars to your computer for reading at your leisure.

3. Copying Photos: You can save any photo to your own computer by right-clicking on it and saving it to a suitable folder in your computer. Or, you go to the "file" button in the top left hand corner of your screen, and go to "save as" to do the same thing.

4. Making Comments: At the foot of each Circular there is a place for you to be able to make a "Comment" on the contents. If you recognise a face in a photo, or something similar, that you want to write about, just click on the word "comments" at the foot of the appropriate Circular and enter your remarks in the window that opens. In order to prevent strangers from posting nonsense and spam, I have set it so that I have to moderate and publish the comments. Anyone who would like to join as a moderator is welcome.

Hi Ladislao,
We have Christmas dinner tonight.
There will be eighteen mouths to fill.
But, Maggie has got three others to help her with the cooking, so it is not too much for one person.
I hope Santa Claus comes to Caracas and did not remember everyone except you!

Dear Maggie and Don
Hope you had a wonderful xmas eve.
The dinner was at your place?
My greetings to your mother, whom I remember quite well.
The numbers that you mention are in the making, most lack the photos that I prepare.
Also I am still reading the September emails.
God bless

Dear Fr Cuthbert
It is me, Andres Larsen, after a short pause of a few days.
Jan Koenraadt from the Netherlands, with whom I have exchanged e-mails lately, has specifically asked me to forward you his best Season's Greetings for Christmas 2006 and New Year 2007.
He apparently remembers you quite distinctly from his time at the Mount.
If you wish to get in touch with Jan Koenraadt directly, his current e-mail address is jankoenraadt@gmail.com
Just in case I am forwarding a copy of this e-mail both to Jan Koenraadt as well as to our coordinator Ladislao Kertesz.
Best regards

I am a Mount Boy as well ... a much "later version" though ... 1962-1965 .... so we never met ... but you reflect my own feelings so well I could not avoid writing you these lines ... you mention a lot of students I also studied with after you left ... what a small world !!!!!!!
However ... you don't know how much I have enjoyed your intelligent remarks and beautiful stories ...
It is incredible how much your grandson resembles you .... I have two granddaughters already ...
Mount was really something wasn't it George ? ....
What a Blessing to be a Mount Boy ....

Dearly Beloved,
It has been said 'better late than never'.
It is also quoted 'it is never too late to mend' (Mother of nine sewing up her husband's pyjama pants crotch).
I don't know really what this has to do with a wonderful, exciting time like Christmas, when we first reflect where we are, then celebrate His birth on that special day, then making our plans to change (New Years Resolutions and all that Jazz), and still fall right back into our same old natural ways and bad habits, within weeks of all these proclacations.
But before we glide into 2007, we need to Wish you all a Wonderful Christmastide (all 12 days), and a fabulous New Year; filled with all that we need to do, more so than we want to do.
It is really and truly a Spiritual turnover, as much as it is a physical and mental one. Love, in all it's five languages (plus it's various dialects) is the great motivator, in both the giving and receiving, so let us all continue in the Spirit of it all, each and every day of the coming Year.
We have had a fabulous year, tremendous blessings and meaningful memories, as we stand beneath the waterfall of abundance blessings that we experienced in 2006, and gratefully thank the Good Lord for it all.
We hope that you too have been similarly inspired by His great presence at the start once more of His recurring journey with us, as we wish you everything for this New Year ahead.
God be with you and yours.
All our love, as ever,
Art & Val

Thought I'd wish you all a very Happy Christmas and God's blessings on you and yours for 2007.
This year I am doing things a little differently and trying to add a personal note to the newsletter and grouping some friends together.
Some of you we have not been in touch with for a while but thought it would be nice to be in touch as we have gleaned your addresses from other mail.
Some of you are Mount Old Boys.
Richard has enjoyed getting the circulars from Ladislao and reading all your news.
Thanks Paul for the family updates we sure have enjoyed them and keep adding to them from various sources.
Today we spent the day at one of the Seminaries for priests here which has a Mission outlook.
They have about 25 young men there.
We had Mass, lunch and a Prayer session.
It was very uplifting and a nice way to celebrate Advent!
The last two nights have been with the grand kids end of year celebrations.
We were very proud last night as Shannon (Geoff and Christine's daughter) who is graduating to High School won the Citizenship award from the two Grade 7 classes.
Alastair and Mary's grand-daughter Annalise also won a prize along with Sabrina Mew (Peter Mew's daughter) so we had a good representation of Caribbean influenced children with three out of about eight prize winners!!
I felt very proud for them all!
We had a nice visit from Patsy and Janice and their respective husbands during May and Janice brought her grand-daughter Brianne who had just finished University.
She enjoyed touring around while the oldies stayed in Perth and met people they knew and chatted their heads off!
It was nice for the four siblings to be together instead of Leary and Richard only having the Lange family!!
Well must go and see about dinner now.
Do write and give us news of yourselves and your family.
Richard joins me in wishing you all the best.
Love Elspeth

Dear Alumni,
Just for the fun I made some pictures of the Christmas marketplace in the centre of Munich where my son stays at the moment.
In the evening when it is dark the colours come out beautifully and clear with these digital camara's.
Maybe you like it to have a close peep what the shopping in Munich is like.
It's not about me, just common pic's for the fun as we walk along the street.
With these digital camera's it all costs nothing, without obligations.
I uploaded about 55 pictures in one big Zip-file of 175 Mb.
It will stay there for five days.
All you need to do is to click the link down below (or copy and paste it to your browser if the click doesn't work), and just download the zip-file to your hard disk and unzip it.

So it is the last of the year 2006 and next year we start again.
One more year, who would have guessed??? But it is thanks to your help!!!

Dear Ladislao,
First of all I would like to wish you and your entire family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2007, with good health, good luck and success in all your endeavours.
Secondly, I would like to thank you and congratulate you for keeping up the good work with the MSB circulars.
You are doing an excellent job and creating an efficient "global tie" between such an incredibly scattered bunch of guys, who once upon a time had been confined to a rather small boarding school and now they are just about all over the world.
How are you doing?
How long do you plan to work?
If nothing comes in between my wife and I would like to take a trip to Caracas next year and then we can meet again.
In March we met you cousin Szuszu here in Valencia when she was touring this region with her cousin from Hungary.
Attached I am sending you a picture of my wife and myself which was taken last summer at a wedding in Bilbao.
Un gran abrazo para todos
Sincerely
Csaba

Dear Friends,

A few weeks ago The Editor of the Catholic News asked me to use some of my pictures for some Easter Editorials.
I had a pleasant surprise when I came in this afternoon to find a copy in the mail with the attached content.
I say pleasant because I had no idea how the photographs would be used.
This Article basically reflects my opinion of God / Religion, and where they are best found.

For the non Trinidadians / Tobagonians Divali is:
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia
Divali, Diwali, also called Deepavali (Sanskrit: दीà¤ÂªÃ ¤¾Ã ¤ÂµÃ ¤²Ã ¥€) is a major Hindu festival that is also very significant in Sikhism and Hinduism.
Known as the "Festival of Lights," it symbolises the victory of good over evil, and lamps are lit as a sign of celebration and hope for mankind.
Celebrations focus on lights and lamps, particularly traditional diyas (as illustrated). Fireworks are associated with the festival in many regions of India.
Diwali is celebrated for five consecutive days at the end of Hindu month of Ashwayuja.
It usually occurs in October/November, and is one of the most popular and eagerly awaited festivals in India.
Diwali comes exactly twenty days after Dussehra.
Hindus and Sikhs alike regard it as a celebration of life and use the occasion to strengthen family and social relationships.
For Hindus it is one of the most important festivals, and beginning of the Hindu year.
Hindus celebrate Diwali to mark the time when Lord Ram Achieved Victory beating Ravana.
It is also a significant festival for the Sikh faith.
Diwali for Hindus, Diwali is not only a festival of lights but also a special occasion to worship Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Mahabali.
For Jains, it is an occasion to remember Lord Mahavira.

Chris,
Thank you so much for Gerard's phone number.
I’ve been trying for years to get it, but I believe that he must have just dropped off the face of the earth.
I had a wonderful chat with him just now, but I think he's still cleaning up after a tornado hit his trailer park, so we've agreed that he'll call me back in a day or two.
Yes, Gerard and I were Queen Scouts together as members of the 1st Mt.St.Benedict Scout Troop, and we've often camped and jamboreed together.
He was a great scout and I'm proud to say, a good friend.
Thanks again.

Subject: The Bearded Monster
Date: Fri, 13 Sep 2002 09:45:19 -0400
Mr. Lewin Macintosh / Short Pants / The Bearded Monster currently Principal of Trinity College in Maraval trincoll@tstt.net.tt.
For those who are interested. Mr. Lewin Macintosh, Teacher at Mount St. Benedict in 1960's and 1970's.
He is also known by his stage name "Short Pants"
To the people in my class he was known as the Bearded Monster.
He used to talk about how the Amerindians had predicted that these bearded monsters would arrive on their shores in odd vessels.
Thus the name as he has a full beard himself.
In my humble or not so humble opinion he was one of the two best teachers I had at Mt. the other being Tony or Dr. David Strissiver.
Mr. Macintosh taught History, Literature, Geography, and English Language.
Mr Macintosh was an enthusiastic and gifted teacher, who installed in one a desire to learn and to question.
A true teacher.
His real love was History and he taught you not just date and facts, but why, how events changed the course of history and possible alternative outcomes had things happened differently.
I have dyslexia so writing essays was hard for me in his classes.
He once came out during his holidays and gave me an Oral exam in Literature and History so I would be able to move up to the next form.
With out a doubt my favourite channel is the History Channel, he must have done something right with me.
His most famous quotation was. "If you fail to prepare, prepare to fail."
He once came to teach maths, not his speciality.
I had a bit of fun running rings around him with Algebra, he eventually asked me to do the examples on the board as he was a bit out of his dept on this matter.
One day Roger Taylor and I were talking in class, and the following transcript shows what a witty and quick thinker he is.
Mackie: Taylor and Gioannetti shut up
Taylor: Sir I was not talking
Mackie: Taylor stand up
Mackie: No Taylor on top of the desk (Taylor was a long lanky string bean in those days) Taylor stood on the desk
Mackie: What do you take me for a fool?
Taylor: No sir
Mackie: A Moron?
Taylor: No sir
Mackie: An imbecile?
Taylor: No sir
Mackie: A Jack Ass?
Taylor: YES SIR
Mackie: Well God became a man to teach amongst men, so I became a Jack Ass to teach amongst Jack Asses, now shut up and sit down.
Mr. Macintosh started the first and only annual calypso competition at Mount.
The winner, Glen Evelyn has some points to make, most of them about the priests’ personal hygiene.
Most of which was true.
But Mt. St. Benedict did not recognize freedom of the Press or Arts, so we never had another.
Some of the verses were:
“When Cutty open he mouth, is den the flies does come out.
He really meant Odo
Rughead come from France, 10 yrs now he wearing the same pants”
It was hilarious, in fact one of my fondest memories of Mount.
Another Mackie favourite was, " In some countries a man kicks some one they cut off his foot, if he steals they cut off his hand, if he rapes......................................."
The class would respond "What Sir, what" in heated anticipation.
He would then respond with a sly grin filtering through a massive beard, "They make him marry her" any way enough dribble and trivia

Dear Friends,
I am introducing Stanley Achong.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Andres:
Thanks for forwarding me the email and family picture the Stanley sent you.
His family looks great and he certainly still recognizable as the Stanley Achong (standing on the right side) I remember from so many years ago.
This is wonderful.
The list of Abbey School Old Boys from our generation is growing thanks to the internet.
I remember Stanley well, especially when he was giving me (and others) guitar lessons in the staircase well at the east end of the main building.
If I remember correctly, each 1 hr guitar lesson was 25 cents TT.
He was already a business entrepreneur back then.
If you haven't already, you might want to direct him to Don Mitchell’s excellent website about the Abbey School, memories, circulars and many old pictures:

Hi. Me again Stanley:
Sitting to the right of Rommel Rosero in the front row is Fulvio Cantore.
In the back row about five from the right might be Adolfo Brito D'Aumaitre whom we used to call "Tucupita".
I know this is not of much help but it is better than nothing.
Attila and I are probably better at the faces of the "Venezuelans" and you are probably better at the faces of the "Trinidadians".
I am also not sure if in Carlos Hoffle is in the photo.
He passed away from cancer quite some years back.
I also don't see Gonzalo Montiel in the photo and if I remember correctly he was also in our class but then I don't fully rely on my hazy recollections.
Regards

Hi Stanley:
Attila did send me a copy. I recognize Specs next to the teacher.
Between Specs and the kid way at left somewhere at the middle left of the bottom row is Rommel Rosero.
I don't know if the guy up at the right is Rampersad.
I also am not sure whether either of the two blond guys is Josh Schoemaker or David Quesnel.
Regards
Andres

Hi Andres, Attilla, Neil:
Thanks for the pics they surely bring back very special memories of my time at the Abbey.
Many of the names are very familiar but I don't have faces to go with them.
It has been a long time and I have gone through many journeys in my life since then.
I have been living in Toronto Canada, since 1975, and was at the Abbey approx 1964 - 1969.
This is really a good thing that the guys are doing in getting old mates back in touch with other and I hope we can all meet some day.
I got married in Trinidad just prior to immigrating to Canada.
I have two sons, Jeremy and Jeffrey 29 and 27 and I imagine they will be leaving the "nest" pretty soon (smile)
I've worked mostly in the Computer industry here in Toronto and have been self employed for roughly 25 yrs now.
For the past 10 yrs, I have been distributing automotive parts at a wholesale level to garages and dealers in Toronto.
With the precious little time I have left, my wife Judy and I have been doing Ballroom dancing, photography and quite a bit of travelling.
Next year, if things go as planned, I will be in Trinidad for a few days and hope to visit the Abbey.
This visit I am looking forward too because I have not been there for almost 25 years.
Pls keep in touch and keep the pics coming.....
Regards,
Stan

Hi Andres:
Surprise, surprise.... I just happened to do a search on my name in Google and ended up at the Abbey school web site.
I'm so happy to hear that you are well and flattered to know that you remembered me.
Many of the names I recall quite vividly and your recollection of our days at the Abbey certainly brings back great memories of the past.
I have been living in Toronto, Canada since 1975 and have only been back to Trinidad once, approx 20 years ago.
Mom spends the Summer with us in Canada and Winter with my sister Diane, who still resides in Trinidad.
I have two children Jeremy and Jeffrey.
Jeremy is presently partnered with me in our Autoparts wholesale business here in Toronto.
Jeffrey does computer programming with Epson Canada.
Please Andres, if you are ever coming to Toronto Canada please let us know because we would love to have you stay with us.
Regards,
Stan

Hi Andres:
I received this picture from Attila yesterday and was not sure whether you had a copy.
I recognize almost all the faces with some names but not all.
If possible, could you get someone to give all the names,
You are second from left rear row and Attila thinks that I amd in the centre "too shy to lift my chin up"(smile).
I suggested to Atilla that he should charter one of those Boeing 737 jets and fly us down to Trinidad and along the way pickup you and the rest of the Old Boys.
Regards,
Stan

Attila, would you by any chance still have Laszlo's Newsletter with the snapshots of me attached available on hand ???
If so could you please, please, forward the Newsletter along with the snapshots to Stanley's e-mail address: hanlan@pathcom.com up in Toronto ?
Cordially appreciative as always
Andres

Hi Stanley, here's an e-mail I'm forwarding to you from Jan Koenraadt in the Netherlands.

Hello Stanley:
Here is an e-mail for you from Jan Koenraadt in the Netherlands.
I no longer remember him but he is the second Abbey School Old Boy along with Attila Gyuris who lauds your guitar lessons on the main building staircase.
While you were doing that I was probably in the library above the refectory busily cutting out photographs of Field Marshalls Rommel (of the Afrika Korps) and Montgomery from books.
I also remember the Saturday night black and white movies like Stromboli with Sophia Loren; To Kill a Mockingbird with Gregory Peck; and Of Human Bondage with Kim Novak.
Incidentally I also recall that in our literature classes we read Somerset Maugham's classic about the Gilbert and Ellice Islands out in the Pacific.

Thanks for the foto of Stanley Achong.
The name rings a bell, the face looks familiar, I crack my memories how he looked like then.
Any picture of him in his guitar lessons time? Got myself only two lessons, this Tom Doodle song".
Then Bobo came, we disturbed his afternoon nap.
No more guitar lessons.
But I kept my guitar, so nowadays my son is playing hard rock metallic on stage in a beatgroup, all electric, ha ha.
Greetings from Jan Koenraadt

Hi Stanley:
You should hit paydirt with either Attila Gyuris or Ladislao Kertesz (the latter is the coordinator and issuer of the Abbey School Old Boys' Network Newsletters).
I'm forwarding copies via e-mail of our exchange to both of them
Regards
Andres

Hi Andres:
I think I will be able to put names to most of the faces if I had a list of the names in the class.
Do you have any contacts who could furnish such a list....
Regards,
Stan

That is for now, hope that all that knew Stan, gets in contact with him.
God Bless.
