Circular No 227

Newsletter for Alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 11 of March 2006. No. 227
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,
I have slowed down in the preparation of the Circulars, although I am keeping the Dates and Numbering, please bear with me these few weeks.
I have been asked to prepare quite a large number of hour in front of the computer doing budgets, proposals and so on, thus in my free time I am avoiding the screen during the evenings.
That does not mean that you should not write and send in articles and comments on old issues. I am sure that you have made observations on the http://msbtunapuna.blogspot.com/, web page, but remember to send me a copy of these so that I may include it in the Circulars.
You might call me lazy for not looking in the Blog, but for the time being, until I am par with the real Date of the Circulars, I am just surviving in getting this out.
For the newsletter, You can also use my updated Bio at the bottom.
******************************************************************
Latest Bio of Attila N. GYURIS (as of Dec 2005).

I attended The Abbey School from Sep 1964 till June 1969.
I went though all the grades from Prep “A” to Form V. ( I did both Form II and Form III in one year, that’s why the years don’t match).
During my 5 years at MSB I was active in athletics in the House of San Anthony, in the “Aqualads” swimming Team, and in the Scout Troop, where I earned my Queen's Scout award.
I was also a drummer in the MSB marching Band.
I remember my favourite activity during weekends at MSB was to hike up the hill up to the “white stones” or escape into the “bush” behind the Refectory and build a “den” (stick house).
I had a pellet gun hidden in the bush with which I had many adventures.
After graduating Form V at the Abbey School in 1969, I returned home to Caracas, Venezuela, where I had to redo all my Venezuelan “Bachillerato” equivalencies in order to be admitted into a Venezuelan University.
That took me a whole year in the Liceo San Jose in Los Teques.
After graduating a second time from this Venezuelan High School, I got admitted in 1971 into the “Universidad Simon Bolivar” in Caracas.
I graduated as a Chemical Engineer in 1977.
I worked for a year as an Industrial Engineer for the Cuerpo de Bomberos del DF (Caracas Fire Dept.)
Then I emigrated to the USA (California) where I attended UCLA graduate school for my Master's Degree.
During all this time I also attended Flight School at Long Beach City College in Calif. and got all my professional aviation FAA Commercial Pilot licenses (ATP and CFII in both airplanes and helicopters) and aviation FAA Mechanic license (Airframe and Powerplant.)
I worked as a flight instructor and charter pilot to help pay for my graduate school tuition and the rent.
After finishing my MBA at UCLA in 1981, a venezuelan oil company headhunter found me and gave me an offer I couldn’t refuse, so I returned to Venezuela to work.
Then, in short order got transferred to the New York /New Jersey area to work as one of the Project Engineers for a multi-billion Shell-Maraven-Lagoven project ("DSMA project") for 2 years.
But I was not loving my engineering career, besides, the Venezuelan oil industry and economy was by then in disarray and had begun its long slide downhill.
I realized that my true calling was in aviation.
I had to make a career-change decision while I was still young, single, mobile and was not yet saddled with any family responsibilities.
So, while still working in NYC, I resigned from Maraven for good in 1983 and embarked fully on my commercial aviation pilot career.
Along the years I have worked as a commercial pilot and flight instructor for several companies and airlines, among them: Petroleum Helicopters in the Gulf of Mexico and USAir out of NY. Finally, in 1986 I got hired by the US Federal Government as a Law Enforcement Agent/Pilot.
This is where I made my career.
At present I have been working for the last 20 years as a Federal Agent / Pilot for US Customs (Treasury Dept.), and recently got transferred to the new US Dept of Homeland Security as an Air Interdiction Agent / Pilot at a grade equivalent to Lt. Colonel.
Currently I fly 4 aircraft types: the C-550 Citation, B-200 King Air, the AS350 Astar and the UH60 Blackhawk.
I will be eligible for my 20-year federal service full retirement next year (2006), and then I will probably look for other commercial pilot adventures in the private sector and teach College.
I am happily married to my wife Susy (she is from Ecuador) and I have a 5-old son, Alex.
My long-standing hobbies include sport skydiving, scuba-diving, practical pistol shooting, and long distance motorcycle touring.
I have finished the LA Marathon recently (4.3 hours), never again!
I own a house on 5 acres in Southern California, so you’all can come an’ visit, there is plenty of room.
My home ph: is 951-780-4197. My email address: gyuris@yahoo.com.
Please write.
Thanks to this wonderful internet, it’s great to be able to reconnect with all my old friends at the Mount.
I have several old b&w photos of my years at MSB.
I will email them as soon as I scan them and label them.

As a reminder of the last School Reunion I am enclosing the invitation for the 2003 Event.
What ever happened with the 2nd. Reunion, was this a 1st and last?? Miguel Gonzalez and committee, any hope for us?
Can the committee members revive the spirit, from reports the reunion was agreeable and enjoyable.
I suggest that the old committee members be contacted and work something out using the experience gained.

A sad note from the Ian Cope family:
My lovely Dad died of cancer at the age of 65 on 9th February 2006.
My Dad enjoyed his life to the full and will be missed everyday by all that loved him.
My Dad always made me smile and would have done anything for me and his family.
Me and my Mum are proud to walk in his memory, to raise money to help other people's loved ones to beat this terrible illness that takes so many lives.
Thank you for your support.

Dear folks,
My cousin Ian Cope was an Abbey School (Mount St. Benedict ) old boy, he died recently of cancer, at age 65. If you all could help the U.K Cancer Research please do so in his memory, his daughter Tracey is doing a 5.K walk in his honour for the Cancer Assoc.
He was at Abbey in the days of Edward Lloyd, Don Mitchell, Vernon De Lima to name a few, the early 50's.
I am sure a lot of old boys would remember Ian from St. Augustine, his dad Frank worked at I.C.T.A ( UWI ) compus.
Thanks in advance.
Gregory Farfan, abbey old boy class of 1962.

Dear Ladislao,
Many thanks for your newsletters. You are doing a great voluntary service.
I do not need to have photos.
Some brief notes as requested:
I attended MSB from 1948 to 1950
I then went on in 1953 to study Chemical Engineering at McGill University and graduated in 1957.
Got married in 1959 and divorced in 1982.
I am blessed with three wonderful children, Yvor, Maroussia and Gregor and with seven grandchildren.
Worked in Canada and US until 1964 and then returned to my home in Dominica where I started a soap and detergent factory using local coconuts (copra) as the base raw material.
Sold the plant to Colgate-Palmolive in 1995 at the age of 62 and planned to retire.
In my semi-senility, I got bored with retirement and went into the hotel business, only to discover that it is more work than manufacturing. I am still planning to retire soon!
Please send my email to my address nassiefp@cwdom.dm and not to Archipelago Trading.
Phillip
