Again conversations between long winded writers, Attila, Andres and others.

Dear Father Christopher,
Thank you so much for your news from the Abbey at Mount St. Benedict in Tunapuna.
It has been almost forty years since I have had any news from any of you.
I am now starting to network with some of the Old Boys.
Over here I have good contact with the Benedictine Abbey at San Jose de Guigue where I know some of the Benedictines quite well including Father Otto Lohner, their Abbott.
Years ago (before 1990) they used to be here in Caracas at San Jose de Avila.
Some of the Benedictines here are from Bavaria, some others from the Basque region in Spain, and novices are fortunately most of them locals.
The difficult part is always finding novices who feel the calling to go into a monastery.
The Abbey here comes under the Benedictine congregation of St. Otilia, a big monastery complex southwest of Munich, in Bavaria.
The Basque Benedictines come from a big Spanish Benedictine monastery called Santo Domingo de los Silos, very well known world wide as a centre for Gregorian song church music, or as we say in Spanish "Canto Gregoriano".
By the way Father Hildebrandt Green from the Benedictine Abbey in Guyana has been here on several month long stays.
He concelebrates Mass with the others here when he is here.
I have so far never spoken with him but know who he is as he stands out and his monk's robe differs slightly from those of the Benedictines here.
One of them here, Father Jesus Maria, a Basque who recently celebrated 50 years' priesthood, has a big book illustrated with colour photographs on 500 Benedictine Abbeys throughout the world.
I didn't know that most are in North America.
There are also several in Australia.
There are even Benedictines mentioned in England who are Anglicans, and there is a convent of Benedictine nuns in Sweden who all converted from Lutheranism.
Please give my best regards to Kitty Marcus when you see her.
Father Otto Lohner, the Abbott here at the Benedictine Abbey in Guigue has an e-mail address which is: abadiaguigue@cantv.net
Happy Easter to all of you at the Mount

Lawrence Town, Azar, from San Fernando Trinidad.

Yes, I see that Atila remembers the business, but this no longer exists.
The business was closed many years ago.
Also I see that you have a very good memory of Mount St, Benedict, but let me add some other things.
For example, we had other companions, "the COCO" Roquefort, whose father lived in Barbados.
Piccoli, I believe that his nickname was Dark brown and came from El Tigre or Anaco.
Fernando Fernandez, cousin of Raul Leoni.
The Echeverria brothers, children of the Ambassador of Venezuela in T'dad. CHECHE was with us.
Lawrence Town, Azar, from San Fernando Trinidad.
You remember the camping which we did in CAURA RIVER, where we constructed a drawbridge on the river.
You remember the escapes towards the mountain, to smoke and to play games which could be dangerous.

However I am sure it was on the South side on Av F. Miranda.
I would look about one block on either side of the "Estacion Chacao".

Dear Friends,
A little recount of Carnival 2006 in TT by Edgar Moffie.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sent: 3/16/2006 3:34:18 PM

Dear friend
Really they were great, I spent two weeks and as you will know everything has changed since my last visit in the 2002.
For our pain something that we have always loved even with the passing the time, our Mt. St. Benedict is every day more desolate, but with the divine grace of God, there are still strong old pillars as they are Fr. Cuthbert, Fr. Odo, Fr. Benedict (whoosh) who has enough by problems with his column (remember the slight hump that he had) and Fr. Augustine among others.
Augustine almost does not see, and this has not allowed him to travel as he hoped to do.
Kitty is still living and with an unforgettable memory.
Cotti told me that he is already 81, like Augustine.

Fr.

Fr. Cuthbert opened a Yogurt factory with a license of the government and they are already exporting even to Tobago and some islands of the Caribbean.
The product is good in fact,
Just as happened in 2002, I was leaving the Mount and did not remember Cotti telling me, Frank Malaver and his spouse came up (I did not run into them on the route)
I say this because I do not remember if Carlos Malaver was who told Cotti when I returned a day before returning to Venezuela.

The administration of the Yogurt factory is being helped by an ex--student of 1980s, and they have a distribution truck.
Fr. Odo is the second after Abbot and many people go to him for spiritual aid (you know).
They have three of the latest model of buses that go from Tunapuna (St. Johns road) to Mount.
Fr. Maurus Superville, the priest who (the one of swimming is it correct?) recently was examined by Dr. Farcheg in Caracas.
Fr. Paschal and him are in charge of the Abbey in Guyana.

With regard to Trinidad, they are well in as much as they have great sources of income product of the gas that are exploring to export.
I saw in the newspapers that have open bidding to the companies for the exploration and seismography (this is something that is shown openly) in the newspaper.
They are import large quantities since I saw many products in the stands coming from the USA.
It is sorry that our Bolivar is not worth an excrement in Trinidad after been valued in our times.
They do not change even a bolivar for dollars, (how you like it?)
If you purchase a ticket for Carnivals like this year for example, Aeropostal had it in Bs. 600,237, oo plus 114,000, oo of tax ($ 332.00) more or less.
But if you purchase it at the last hour, it is Bs. 850,000, oo plus tax ($465,00)

The official exchange rate is 1 USD to 6 TT, so with 10 to 15 thousand TT you can do bachanal, you take everything.
There are many foreign investors like from Canada, the USA, Australia, Europe (many people of color) the latest cars are all last model in the form of Ford, Chevrolet, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Honda, etc.
According to versions of my cousin, the purchase of fish is scarce due to the problems with the fishermen on the side of Venezuela, reason why the price take off and it takes to get it.
There are no Mcdonald nor Wendy´s but they have KFC Kentucky fried chicken and Burger king and other similar branches.
Roty is not been lost and there is a system to take home.

At the end of this Carnival the Oval, that is in Queen´s Park Savannah, where they ran racing horses, is going to be demolished to construct a Centre of Culture and Folklore.
In fact the Hippodrome was taken out with the one in San Fernando and centralized in ARIMA.
I say this because my cousin works in the Hippodrome de Arima.
The slang is ending the language in the island, already it is worse than when we spoke it in the school (you remember as they spoke Frank, Nevel Tinea).

For Carnivals a decision was made to reduce the force of people who participated in MAS because the bands exceeded 25.000 people and it took them more than 4 hours to cross the main platform.
But I say to you that there were too many people.
The flight of Aeropostal in which I went, 80% of the passengers came from other routes to Caracas to make connection since they could not obtain a flight from origin, you can imagine and they were from Central America, the USA, Canada, and part of the Trinitarios that live or work in the Caribbean.
I met 10 people in Maiquetía who came from England since they did not obtain a flight connection.

Based on oil, the people are being paid well in TT dollars and there are some that receive USD and can keep it ,not like us here.
The prices of the houses are in USD and there is a great amount of construction of townhouses and other condominiums.
Arima is expanding in that type of constructions.
The BASS (the waste trash) via of entrance to POS is still there.
Also there are several MALLs on the outskirts so it is not necessarily to go the centre.
The BATA and BATOOS BROTHERS shops no longer exist.
The old cinemas at the centre where we made liming to see double films do not exist either.
They have an enormous ROYAL CROWN PLAZA HOTEL.
The hotels around the Savannah and certain clubs no longer exist.
Everything has changed, you must go and spend a long while walking to be able to reorient to the old times to determine whichever things no longer exist.

I am working in the photos and other small things that I obtained in Mount to send them to the Circular, plus the photos of the Guardian Express Magazine where all the carnival ones are for send by lot.

Dear Ladislao,
I did get your last circular also, but when I tried to open the attachment I could not find any of the programmes to respond.
I did not ask any of the others yet if they were successful, but I have not seen it printed out yet in our Reading Room as usually Fr John (the abbot) will do for the benefit of those who have no access to a computer for one reason or another.
Best wishes once more and may the good Lord bless you with good health and strength to continue sending out the circulars regularly which you have been doing so faithfully over the past years.

Dear Fr. Christopher,
Thank you very much for the resume.
I am glad that the event went as nicely as was expected.
I am sorry that I could not collaborate with the Circular but I am still trying to get together the pieces.
I made a mistake in trying to automatize the addresses in a simple fashion and that took time.
Then I was out on a trip that took over five weeks travelling all over the country.
When I got back to writing I was about five issues late, and still no address list.
Finally I finished the semiautomatic list yesterday.
And still do not know which Circulars were sent as those send were not in numerical order.
I also got reports that some circulars left without the attachment or plain blank.
Have a Prosperous new year and lots of health.
Please give my regards to all at the MSB
God bless

Dear Ladislao,
A very happy New Year to you and all your loved ones.
The visit of Rev. Deacon Lionel Roberts came off as planned last Sunday, 26th Dec. 2004, feast of the Holy Family.
I myself happened to be the chief celebrant of the 8.30 Highmass at which Lionel assisted and preached.
His wife Merlene read the 1st reading and Dr David Bratt the 2nd.
Lionel read the Gospel after which he preached a somewhat lengthy (by Mount standards) sermon.
At the beginning of the Mass I welcomed Lionel and introduced him as a former monk of Mount St. Benedict, where he spend 14 years and was much loved and appreciated.
He himself in his introduction to his sermon spoke very highly of the Mount and the very happy memories of and the great esteem in which he has always held the place.
I also had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. David Bratt and his wife Mediana and Mr Mervyn Assam.
I had been told that Justice Anthony Lucky and his wife Cintra would also be present, as also Mr Vernon De Lima, but was later informed that they were unavoidably absent.
After the Mass Lionel and his wife, Dr Bratt and his wife, Mr Mervyn Assam, Br Gerard (Rupert) Alexis, Fr. Augustine Schreurs proceeded to the Pax Guesthouse, where they were entertained to a sumptuous brunch and drinks and had a very enjoyable time recalling the good old times.
Fr. Christopher Theunissen
(I just wonder if any one can contact Mervyn Assam need his telf no. for the list. Ed.)

Some sad news, sorry we do not have the eulogy.
Date: 15 Oct 13:28 (PDT)

Dear Ladislao,
We received the sad news of the passing of Fr. Paul van den Eijnden in his native Holland on October the 13th.
The funeral will take place on Saturday, 18th October, after which according to his last wishes his mortal remains will be cremated.
Fr. Paul had been battling cancer of the kidneys for a number of years and was getting increasingly weaker.
In the end he was longing to die and return to his Lord.
God bless and every good wish.
Fr. Christopher.

Dear Ladislao,
I'm in Holland at the moment for medical reasons and Fr. Francis Friesen has asked me to write this to you.
First of all he wants you to know how much he enjoys receiving your circulars regularly.
Although he is almost completely blind, he manages to read them with the help of a TV Reading Loupe, a huge magnifier, able to project a written text on a kind of TV screen.
He has just received your message attached to circular 117, dated Feb. 1.
He was surprised to read the article of the T'dad Express about the Library.
He himself many years ago worked hard and was one of the pioneers in developing the library into the fine institution it is today.
It will interest you to know that your initiative to publish the Berchmanianum e-mail address in Circular 97, has born fruit.
Since then Fr. Francis received a number of messages from amongst others Anthony Lucky (T&T), Ian Rodrigues (Guyana/Grenada/Canada), Christopher de Marothy (Venezuela/U.S.A.).
Anthony and Ian mentioned they were present at my ordination to the priesthood in the Abbey in 1950.
Justice Anthony plans to visit here when next he will be in Hamburg, Germany to attend the sessions of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.
Christopher de Marothy surprised me with a photo of 1956 of the abbey boys choir of which I was in charge.
At this particular concert he made his debut as a violinist, "screeching away at the violinfs he call it.
It makes Fr. Francis very happy to know that so many of the past alumni of the Abbey School have done so well, including yourself.
He and all the other former teacher are very proud to have been able to contribute in some small way to this future development.
I shall now attempt to identify the monks on the photo, taken during the Golden Jubilee Year 1962.
For further clarifications and some omissions you may perhaps contact the monks at the Mount. Especially Br. Gerard (formerly Br. Rupert) is very good at identifying persons. God bless.

PS We have just received news that Fr. Cornelius Verburg is very sick, terminal with cancer. Some may remember him as art teacher at the Abbey School in the sixties. Please, pray for him.
