Circular No 247

Newsletter for Alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 29 July 2006. No. 247

Dear Friends,
I know that I tend to repeat myself quite often but I would like to read articles on those that I try to bring together to the ALUMNI Association.
In this issue in particular I have two for which I have had to copy articles from the internet.
How much it would be nicer to have something written in an non business fashion.
Ivan is one that has been so kind to write for the Newsletter.

Dear Ladislao,
Yes I'm alive and well and graduated from the 'Mount' in 1967.
I am very friendly with three old "religious" mount' boys, Norman Tang, Roger Gillileau and Roger Ames all members of the school drum/bugle band and scout troop.
Also I am working opposite to where Peter Soodeen works, day boy in our time.
When I left the 'mount' in '67 I represented Trinidad as the Duke of Edinburgh gold award winner to the centennial celebrations in Canada- a wonderful experience and my first time in a large country, what a cultural shock it was!
A further ten years was spent in Canada, graduating with a BA in Math.
Back in Trinidad I followed a career in Woodworking (my inherited love from Fr.Ildefonse) until 1992 when I changed jobs and formed Tech Trinidad Co. Ltd.-a sole distributor of the Tech International line of tyre repairs.
It has been a struggle since expansion of the business to include the vulcanization aspect of tyre repairing.
I am happily married with two daughters.
My office nos. are (868)627 5896 and 624 5486

Hi,
Thanks for all the great info.
What did happen to Mount St. Benedict, please update me?
For those that don't remember me, I was a day student, well known for my swimming achievements, rather than my academic prowess.
Some of you may recall me from my nickname" Tatar" Peter Laughlin

An article on Peter G. Laughlin:
Peter Laughlin has built a stellar reputation providing one-of-a-kind opportunities in Sarasota's luxury home market -- for many years as Sarasota's top luxury real estate broker, and now as a developer of these magnificent homes.
Hailing from Trinidad, Peter was involved in the development, marketing and promotion of single-family and resort properties. He also ran an international consulting business in Miami, handling major companies and investors who needed representation in South America, the Caribbean and the USA.
Peter then brought his remarkable background to Sarasota where he consistently helps buyers of luxury homes make choices that have a positive impact on their lifestyle and wealth.
Peter attributes his success to commitment, planning, a high-performing team of professionals, and an abundance of satisfied customers.

Subject: Happy Birthday

Happy belated Birthday Cathy, and how was the trip to England with Thelly; and how was Jonathan as I am not sure I have his correct e-mail.
We are all fine, and I am 95% on the mend with the new medication.
Still have some more tests, and go to the Heart Clinic on 22 Nov for updated evaluation, but feel great and back to my old self.
Brian, are you in touch with the Old Mount Boys through Ladislao, and do you get the Weekly News Bulletins?
When was it you were at the Abbey School? What years?
Val & I are looking at the possibilities of another trip to Tobago in the Winter (probably Feb/Mar but are doing some house repairs and upgrading, as we were away for a Year and it needs some work.)
Drop us a line sometime. Love to hear from you both.
As always,
Art & val

By Brian Lewis, article taken from the Guardian:
I do not like to use articles that are not sent by the ALUMNI but I have no alternative when I do not get an answer or resume in 5 years:
Registered Architect
At the turn of this century, our natural resources have presented this nation with unique challenges and opportunities for human development.
Our current leaders have translated this challenge into the 2020 Vision in which an ambitious building programme forms a key component.
So far, this vision has been translated into a state-driven construction model in which the Government directly builds school, university, hospital, housing and office facilities.
The alternative model for development, one presumably rejected by the current administration, is for the Government to provide the required infrastructure and create the investment climate with appropriate incentives so as to attract private sector development.
One assumes that such an ambitious state-driven construction programme should also have wider and deeper issues than mere shelter.
Reduced unemployment and crime are obvious objectives, but are they enough for us to achieve the 2020 Vision?
In T&T, the majority of our state enterprises and developers are still using “cost-per-square-foot” norms to determine the efficiency and performance of buildings when international standards have long since moved on in search of sustainable development objectives that require life cycle costing, energy performance evaluation and a complete re-think of the way offices are fitted out.
We are constructing buildings to last between 50 to 100 years and unless we analyse their performance over their extended life, then we would be creating problems for future generations.
New buildings are also an opportunity for cultural change in the way they work and the way they affect its occupants, transforming the work ethic and work attitudes.
Interior environmental standards are needed to establish optimum daylight levels for a comfortable and healthy working environment.
The term green building used to summarise these contemporary objectives does not generally form part of our current construction agenda.
The cost of maintenance and replacement during the life of a building become significant in design and so too is the energy cost for building operations. Informed private developers know and understand these issues because they own buildings and must make a profit in a competitive climate while paying for building maintenance.
State enterprises are less well-informed and have a less-than-desirable track record for building maintenance.
Current trends point toward the use of the Building Information Model approach to design in which a 3D digital model of the building is produced that contains intelligent information on all its components that can be used to improve design, operations and maintenance over the extended life of the building.
Together with modern design methods, new standards and techniques are needed for contemporary building procurement systems.
Large construction projects that need to be delivered quickly and economically can no longer be delivered by using the traditional procurement process of design-production-tender-build approach.
We need to take notice of other building procurement systems being used around the world that allow an overlap in the design and building processes otherwise, we will not be as efficient as we can or need to be.
By failing to design sustainable green buildings, we fall short of the 2020 Vision objective set for this nation. It is not too late to stop and reflect on our performance.
However, if we continue on our present course, we are likely to achieve outmoded and outdated buildings because the standards we are emulating are already obsolete.
In fact, if we do not make adjustments now, we are unlikely to arrive at our 2020 vision—we will miss the mark. In order to achieve 2020 status in terms of construction, we must aim at more contemporary standards than we presently follow.
If there is a 2020 Vision for construction, perhaps these thoughts might serve as a useful agenda for further development.
Hopefully, state enterprises would take these contemporary objectives on board and incorporate them into the development that is now gaining momentum.
